Social Change Theories

Structural Functionalist

Everyone agreeing on a problem, and solving it

For example: The war of terror, everyone agreed-ed terrorism was awful, so we made motions to combat it.

Marxism is heavily based on functionalist reasoning, the majority is not always right

For example, Marxism was basically "kill the rich and spread their wealth."

Feminism

Cognative

Helps learn good things

For example, a child is shaped from their parents actions. If a child's parents are very respectful to others, the child may learn to also be very respectful

Could teach bad things

For example, if a child's parents are constantly swearing, the child may think it is acceptable to swear, hence they will start swearing.

Humanism

Promotes rational thinking of how to solve human issues.
To solve a problem, an individual must think realistically and apply known science, rather than relying on supernatural beings with no effect.
Too much emphasis on subjective experience

Cultural Materialism

Incorporates aspects of cultural diffusion into societies

When societies interact with one another, resources are exchanged in order to better develop each's society

May influence a society in a negative way, such as through manipulation and exploitation of resources.

The Opium Wars between Great Britain and China was through an exchange of resources, but manipulated the Chinese to be dependent on British opium.

Intersectionality

Acknowledges there are several forms of discrimination to overcome.

Solves negative problems, like Racism

Labels specific social groups that often result in discrimination

For example. Racism

Conflict

Positive
Disagreement could also lead to an issue being solved
Negative
Disagreement could lead to many bad things

For example War.
