8-2 Percent

Express the number as a percent
3.53

Answer 353%

Why?
Just move the decimal point to to the right to get this answer.

What is 8% of 24

Answer: 1.92

Why?
Take .08 and multiply it by 24
We got the .08 by moving the decimal point to to the right to make it a number.

A real estate commission rate is 6% what is the commission on the state of a 93,000 dollar home.

Answer 5,580 dollars

Why?
Take 93,000 and multiply it by 0.06

Hannah went to the store and bought a chair for 6.18, a rake for 12.45, a spade for 11.12, a mower for 141.03, and two six packs of water for 2.02 each. What was the bill?

Answer: $184.82

Why?
Add up all the different prices to get this answer.
Careful to make sure you add 2.02 twice since you are buying two packs instead of one.

The water in a tank weighs 693.75 lb. One cubic foot of water weighs 62 lb. How many cubic feet of water does the tank hold.

Answer: 11.1 cubic feet of water

Why?
Divide 693.75 by 62 to get 11.189.
In this instance we do not round up because it the tank can not hold any more than that. So we round down to 11.1 cubic ft to be safe.

7-1 Introduction to Decimals

Write the following as a sum, using powers of 10 to show place value: 0.279

=2x10 to the -1st +7x10 to the -2nd +9x10 to the -3rd

Without performing the actual division determine whether the following represents a terminating decimal.
19/40

Yes! It is a terminating decimal.

Why?
You can't reduce it any farther.

Write as a decimal 1/8
Answer: 0.125

Answer: They are in order

Line up the decimals so that you can clearly see that one number is bigger than another. The smaller number means that that decimal is bigger than a larger number.

6-3 Mult. and Divide Fractions

Multiply. Write the answer in the simplest form.

4/25x5/24

Answer: 1/30

Why?
You do not have to find common denominators so you can just multiply right across to get your answer. You reduce 20/600 to 1/30 to get your answer by dividing by 20.

Solve using the multiplication principle

2/15t=-1/4

Answer: t=-15/8

Why?
Just cross multiply everything together. If you do it successfully you will get.
8t=-15
Divide both sides by 8 to get t by itself and you will get the answer t=-15/8

Perform the proper calculations. Reduce your answer whenever possible.

14x1 and 1/2

Answer: 21

Why?
Take 1 and 1/2
Take 2x1+1 to get 3/2 This changes the number and fraction to just a fraction

You can then just multiply 14/1 by 3/2 to get 42/2
Reduce this to get your answer of 21

Choose the number that best approximates each of the following

9 and 5/6 is about 10

10x2=20

Multiply and simplify

9 to the ninth x 9 to the fourth

Answer: 9 to the 13th

Add the number above the nine which are the nine and four to get 13. This makes the answer 9 to the 13th

6-2 Adding, Subtracting, and Est. Fractions

Subtract 61/75 from 27/35

Answer: 22/525

Why?
Basically we are trying to find a common denominator. Lots of guessing, but what you find is that both the denominators have a common denominator of 525.

(75x7)=525 and (35x15)=525
With both of these what you do to the bottom you have to do to the top.
(61x7)=427 and (27x15)=405

What we have now...
427/525-405/525=22/525
This can't be reduced so it's our answer.

Change the following fraction to a mixed number. 23/3

Answer: 7 and 2/3

Why?
How many 3's can go into 23. The answer is 7.
7x3=21
23 is our total so 23-21=2 we have 2 left over.
So therefor that 2 is part of the thirds so it is our left over 2/3

So our whole number 7
And our fraction 2/3

Our answer is 7 and 2/3

Estimate the following as a whole number, as 1/2, or as a mixed numeral where the fractional part is 1/2

7/451+7/13+5/9

Answer is approximately 1

7/451 is closes to 0

7/13 is closest to 1/2

and 5/9 is closes to 1/2

So add them all up

1/2+1/2+0

Equals approximately 1 or 1

6-1 Rational Numbers

Find two fractions equivalent to the following fraction. 2/7

Answer: 4/14 and 12/42

Why:
Multiply 2/7 by 2/2 to get 4/14
Multiply 2/7 by 6/6 to get 12/42

Write the fraction in lowest terms: 24/42

Answer: 4/7

Why: Take 24/42 and divide the numerator and denominator by 2 and then by 3 to reduce the fraction to 4/7.

Determine if the following pairs are equal by changing both to the same denominator: 15/24 and 20/21

Answer: Not Equal

Why: They are not equal because you can't reduce them to the same fraction. They do not equal the same even if they are reduced or are given common denominators.

Find a value for x so that 16/12=-4/x

You need to cross multiply here

You will get 16x/16=-48/16 dividing by 16 here

After this you will get

x=-3

Arrange each of the following in decreasing order: 11/14, 11/21, 11/23

They are already in order.

Why?

Think of a pie...

Each time 11 pieces are given to you out of a certain number of pieces.

One will get a bigger piece with a smaller total amount of slices (denominator) than a larger denominator. This means that there are more pieces, but overall you will get less (decreasing order)

Rule: If numerator is the same, the smaller the denominator is bigger/more than a larger one
