Mennonites are a group of people who practise a form of Christianity. Many Mennonites believe in the importance of community, simplicity, peace and non violence. The first Mennonite immigrants came to Canada from the United States around the time of the American Revolution. By the early 1800's, about 2000 Mennonites had settled in Southern Ontario. Between the late 1800's and the mid 1900's almost 30,000 Mennonites left Europe. They came to Canada in search of inexpensive land and religious and cultural freedom. Most of these new immigrants built communities in Manitoba.
