This chapter has an exiting and busy atmosphere. The parties many guests add to the overcrowded impression. It has set a hyper tone, where people begin to engage with each other even though they probably won't remember them and the next time they attend another of Gatsby's parties the likely hood is that they will speak to another set off people who are completely different.

One dramatic climax is when everyone finds out that someone has crashed a car. This creates a tense atmosphere, showing what can happen when at Gatsby's parties and how they aren't as innocent as they seem.

When Nick first meets Gatsby he doesn't intorduce himself. We are unaware if this is because Gatsby believes that Nick already knows that he is Gatsby or whether he just wants to create a mysterious tone.
