The notion of a deliberate effort to reduce intellectual engagement in America is explored through the lens of educational and cultural influences. It argues that our thoughts and behaviors are heavily shaped by our surroundings, including the media and the education system.
Experiments conducted by researcher Herbert Krugman reveal that when a person watches television, brain activity switches from the left to the right hemisphere. The left hemisphere is the seat of logical thought. Here, information is broken down into its component parts and critically analyzed. The right brain, however, treats incoming data uncritically, processing information in wholes, leading to emotional, rather than logical responses. The shift from left to right brain activity also causes the release of endorphins, the body's own natural opiates--thus, it is possible to become physically addicted to watching television, a hypothesis borne out by numerous studies which have shown that very few people are able to kick the television habit. It's no longer an overstatement to note that the youth today that are raised and taught through network television are intellectually dead by their early teens.
Turn Off the TV!

The use of spellcheck for so many years has decreased my ability to spell.
Charlotte Iserbyt wrote "The Deliberate Dumbing Dumbing Down of America" ...One of the interesting insights revealed by these documents is how the social engineers use a deliberately created education “crisis” to move their agenda forward by offering radical reforms that are sold to the public as fixing the crisis — which they never do. The new reforms simply set the stage for the next crisis, which provides the pretext for the next move forward. This is the dialectical process at work, a process our behavioral engineers have learned to use very effectively. Its success depends on the ability of the “change agents” to continually deceive the public which tends to believe anything the experts tell them.
I find myself looking up meaning of words frequently. My vocabulary has been dialed down to medical terms and then simple worldly terms.

Famous science fiction writer Isaac Asimov once said: "There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."
I chose the theme "America dumbed down" because I really believe it to be more of a conspiracy. Our thoughts are not our own as we think they are. We become subjects of what we surround ourselves with. We are what we eat, we are what we invest our time into.

As a result, a 2007 Harvard study (link is external) determined that a majority of teens are ignorant about current affairs and do not read the newspaper. Moreover, a Pew Research Center survey (link is external) found that people age 18 to 34-years-old are consistently less knowledgeable about current events than their elders. On a current events quiz, young adults averaged 5.9 correct answers out of 12 questions, fewer than the averages for Americans ages 35 to 49 and above age 50. Many of these teenagers are or will be voters in a short time. I don’t think there’s anything more frightening than this.
