Inquiry based lesson: Aboriginal Artefacts

Resources/materials needed

Laptops and where possible, original artefacts to make learning authentic
Videos, documents, websites, textbooks and first hand accounts as evidence to support student learning about Aboriginal history
Materials depend on the student's project - it could be materials for junk modelling, photos, cardboard, paint, etc.

Students will develop "soft" skills

Students will learn to compromise and communicate effectively with team mates. These are essential skills in life beyond the classroom.
Students will self assess and peer assess their work. This leads to internationalisation of the project development process and a critical examination of the positives and how they could improve for the next time.
Students will work in teams (at the discretion of the teacher) and will develop responsibility skills, communication skills and organisation (e.g. each person is assigned a role)

Students will develop critical thinking skills and independent working skills

Students will become less reliant on teacher guided instruction and gain confidence as self reliant learners
Students will be led by their interests with the aim of developing greater self awareness as learners e.g. the process of developing a project, timing and self-organisation.
Students will apply their knowledge to a project and presentation of their choice. This will help to develop their self-confidence and independent working skills.
Students will develop their own enquiry questions and develop a memorial of their choice using artefacts

Students will develop historical skills

Students will develop an understanding of the changing values that have shaped and determined the treatment of FNMI people
Students will develop their knowledge of a significant period of Canadian history through evidence handling (primary and secondary) through documents, videos, first hand accounts and where possible, visits to FNMI community centres
Students will develop the key skills in History of significance, cause and consequence and perspective
