Instructional Strategies

The concept of "Talk Pals" offers students an innovative way to engage with peers globally through video conferencing, enhancing their learning experiences. This approach is akin to traditional pen pals but leverages modern technology to facilitate face-to-face interactions, making the learning process more authentic and meaningful.

Talk Pals

These teachers enhanced their curriculum by adding Talk pals into their lessons. These teachers gave students the tools and environment for a deeper learning experience.
While video conferencing, students began to put more thought into what they were saying and conveying the meaning of the standard being taught.
Talk pals allowed students to interact with other students on a new engagement level. Students were excited about learning and having conversations with other students that they would have never been able to meet without video conferencing.
This chapter goes into great deal about Ms. Stefani’s experience with “talk pals” and her way of navigating this new experience. Throughout her experience, she realized that by videoconferencing with other classes from around the world, it gave students the opportunity use technology and learn how to use web-based tools that would help them navigate learning for the years to follow.
It allows students to have face-to-face inactions to share information with other people around the globe. This gives students a more meaningful and authentic learning experience.
Talk pals is a different version of pen pals but with video conferencing.

Cooperative Learning

When cooperative learning and concept mapping are used together, student have a deeper understanding of the content being taught. A study was conducted to test the effectiveness of cooperative learning and concept mapping and the results were promising.
In one article Cooperative learning is used by using concept mapping. In the article Guvenc and Un Acikgoz states that concept mapping is, “a powerful learning strategy, which allows for depiction of both the interrelationships among the elements of contents and relationship between new and prior knowledge.”(p.2)
Cooperative learning is a great tool to enhance learning but needs to be done in a very organized and teachers and students need to have a full understanding of their roles in cooperative learning in order for it to be a successful strategy.
In an article written by Al-Yaseen, cooperative learning is a great way to scaffold learning. Al-Yaseen states, “ Cooperative learning enhances children’s learning process as they are encouraged to participate in activities which are slightly above their level of achievement and that requires cooperation with the rest of the group members to fulfill the assigned tasks due to their participation in a social context” (p.273).
Cooperative learning is a strategy used to promote positive student independence, peer accountability, skills on how to work in a small group setting, positive student interaction, and group processing.
