The goal of this mind map is to provide students with examples, videos, and games on mean, median, mode and range to give them a better understanding. The audience is elementary students grades 2-5.
This is a great game to see how much you have learned! It will ask several questions regarding mean, median, mode and range.
Range is the difference between the highest and lowest values of a set.
Example: 89, 73, 84, 91, 87, 77, 94
1.) Rearrange the orders from least to greatest. 73, 77, 84, 87, 89, 91, 94
2.) Find the greatest value= 94
3.) Find the lowest value= 73
4.) Subtract 94-73= 21
The range equals 21.
This is another fun game for students. It helps students understand median by re-arranging the buildings by the different heights.
Median is the middle number.
Example: 12, 3 and 5
1.) Rearrange the numbers from smallest to largest. 3,5,12
2.) Find the middle number by crossing of the numbers one by one on each side. 3/,5,/12
The median is 5 because it is the middle number.
What happens if there is 2 numbers in the middle?
Example:
1.) 3, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 21, 23, 23, 23, 23, 29, 40, 56
2.) 3, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 21, 23, 23, 23, 23, 29, 40, 56
3.) 21 + 23 = 44.... 44 ÷ 2 = 22
The median is then 22.

This is a very fun game for students. It is video game that helps students work on the mean, mode and median concepts.
Mode is the number that appears most often.
Example: 3, 7, 5, 13, 20, 23, 39, 23, 40, 23, 14, 12, 56, 23, 29.
1.) Rearrange the numbers in order.
3, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 20, 23, 23, 23, 23, 29, 39, 40, 56
2.) Find the number that occurs most often.
The mode is 23 because it appears three times.
This is a fun, interactive game that lets students re-arrange the trolls by height and helps them find the average.
This video goes through an example finding mean by going through the process step by step.
Mean: Is the average of numbers.
Example: 6,11,7
1.) Add up all the numbers: 6+7+11= 24
2.) Divide by how many numbers there are.
24/ 3= 8
The mean is 8
