Professional Learning: Toward Permanent Change in thinking

Navigating the complexities of problem-solving requires a structured approach that integrates various phases, including identifying the type of problem, whether it is a design, decision-making, or diagnostic issue.

Professional Learning: Toward Permanent Change in thinking

Problem solving: 1)Name-2)Frame-3)Move-4)Reflect: )Valkenburg & Dorst, p. 6)

1) Important parts

2) Problem/solution to explore

3) Sorting info

4) reflection of activities

POTENTIAL MEANS OF DAT COLLECTION: STUDENT/TEACHER ACCOUNTS: RUBRIC FROM TEACHERS BASED ON STUDENT PERFORMANCE OF BEHAVIOUR ATTITUDE AND PARTICIPATION (Gassmann & Zeschky p. 99)

ANALOGICAL THINKING: MY ANALOGY (STILL IN PROGRESS: based on some observations More and more students are entering teacher training without having previous experience with children. Many enter programs without the necessary motivation and determination to learn content and skills. Other behaviours hinder their development such as poor adherence to classroom etiquette (arriving late, unprepared, disruptive in class, skipping classes). What procedures should be implemented in student selection process in order to select the most promising student. If a selection process was in order would it change class dynamics what effect will it have for teacher attrition and would this change academic policies. Show policies be implemented in class to manage behaviours? Should instructors and advisors tell students that they should withdraw from teacher training?

PROBLEM STRUCTURING

Problem structuring-problem solving phases-reversing directions-modularity (Goel& Pirelli p.405)

Exploration-identify interconnected parts-some solutions for parts-combination of solutions

Back and forth exchange which happens many times

Data: gives you the stepping stones to start the inquiry process...

CAN PLC DECREASE THE RATE OF TEACHER BURNOUT AND ATTRITION?????? (Burning Question)

Real time picture: of student learning. research Brief: Are you a true PLC P.4

Time and Space to ponder: protected space-Liberate time to do so!!!!

Common connection-is this more eefcetively achieved through face to face interactions with shared students vs digital connection????

protected time-norms-evidence based decision making-common connection

Excellence is everyone's responsibility

How is relational trust developed through distance collaboration/digital tools. Does relational trust take more time when collaborative teams are not face to face????? Burning Question

PLC: is a shared objective: Always for the student.

Adaptive: with new knowledge/data-new directions arise

Relational trust: respect for others-competence-integrity-respect

In the field of physical education, transfer of learning is a common thread among sports. What do we know about a certain sport-how skill-tactics-strategies transfer from one context to the next.

Quick adaptations are required -what knowledge can we transfer?

WHO IS YOUR TEAM? WHO ARE THE MEMBERS: My team comprises of research professors, student advisor, field instructors and supervisors.

ANALYZING, SHARING AND CELEBRATING: What is the data saying? ORGANIZE-READ DESCRIBE-CLASSIFY-INTERPRET-REPORT-RECOMMENDATIONS-SHARE FINDINGS-CELEBRATE (COLLABORATIVE INQUIRY: A Facilitators Guide

What kinds of strategies are best suited when groups encounter resistance by a member of their team?

HOW CAN I REGULATE STUDENT BEHAVIOUR IN UNIVERSITY ? HOW SHOULD I CLASSIFY BEHAVIOURS? HOW CAN I SET UP MY PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS FOR SUCCESS IN EDUCATION?

How does fatigue and anxiety effect the rate of problem solving ????

PURPOSE

MAKE SURE EVIDENCE IS TRIANGULATED=SUPPORTING AND PROVIDING WEIGHT TO EVIDENCE: THE MORE SOURCES THE BETTER

In my field, I use a lot of student learning data both formative and summative assessments along with perceptual data as in physical education observing is easiest. Process data is often made explicit through collaborating with other staff members.

2)DEMOGRAPHIC

3)PERCEPTUAL

1)STUDENT LEARNING

Students entering teacher training (physical education) believe that skill and ability in sports will make them successful as a physical education teacher.

In teacher education: What conditions are necessary to increase and maintain student motivation and self-efficacy

what are the necessary behaviours and beliefs that pre-service teachers need to acquire in order to be effective in the field of education?

INTERRUPTION OF BIASES: Katz & Dack, 2014, 37-39

Some extroverted students may seem more engaged which often seem as though they are learning more, yet assessments show that my introverted students score the same

vividness Bias

Placing more weight on prestigious attributes:

Omission Bias

Doing vs not doing

Conformation Bias

Favouring information which confirms what you already believe in: I think we have a tendency to do this to avoid a state of dissonance
