The cessation of the universe's expansion poses catastrophic scenarios for life and the planet. In the event of a Big Crunch, the universe would collapse into a super dense and hot state, making survival impossible due to extreme heat and radiation.

What would happen if the Universe stopped expanding? By: Jashandeep Sarah 591705

Theories on what could happen

The Big Chill
The last Stars go out, and we lose light from space because of how far we are apart
Stars lose access to raw material needed for star formation
Planets, Stars and Galaxies are very far apart from each other
The Universe will get colder and colder, since that energy is so spread out
The energy from the Big Bang keeps spreading out for eternity
The Universe DOESN'T stop expanding
The Big Crunch
We can say this because that super dense state could be the Big Bang before it exploded
This might have already happened and could be the life cycle of the Universe, it explodes, contracts, explodes and etc
The Universe contracts and all matter returns to a super dense state
If the average density of the Universe is enough to stop expansion, the Universe will collapse on itself
The Universe doesn't expand forever, the direct consequence of the Big Bang

What will happen to us

Based on the Big Chill
And if a genius finds the solution to Global Warming and we conserve resources, then there's always the time bomb we orbit that could engulf us
Like Global Warming is a big problem right now and because of it we are exposed to the sun's rays more, so we could burn to death before the Chill
However if this is the fate of the Universe then we would die from something else before looking for resources in space
It would force us to conserve resources since we would be too far to try and get some from other galaxies
The Universe expands forever becoming cold, vast and dead
Based on the Big Crunch
So sadly we would die once we got into that super dense state and wouldn't live to see the Big Bang
Finally theirs radiation, which we couldn't withstand while being beside a star as big as the sun so we would die in seconds
The Big Bang was roughly 10 Billion degrees and Fire fighter suits can withstand 1000 degrees of heat, but not for long
So we would ultimately be wiped out, however if we go through a miracle and live there's more that will kill us
It would destroy the planet because the Universe will collapse and Earth will go into that hot super dense state

Why is the Universe expanding anyways?

The Big Bang
Also imaged heat of the Big Bang in fine detail by Cobe and WMAP probes
Some proof we have to back this up is radiation we find in space which could be remnants of the Big Bang
This energy then got spread out and got cooler and cooler, but the Universe got bigger and bigger
This energy was pushed out because of the big explosion that happened
So it was a small extremely hot spec of energy
Helium, Hydrogen and Lithium were fused in the first few minutes of the Big Bang
Then there was a tremendous explosion, which caused the Universe back then to expand
12-14 Billion years ago the Universe was a few mm across
The theory for the origin of the Universe
The Hubble Constant
Edwin P. Hubble discovered the Universe has been expanding after an explosion that took place 13.7 Billion years ago
Right not the Universe is expanding roughly 74.3 km per second per megaparsec ( A megaparsec is roughly 3 million light years)

Hypothesis

If the Universe stopped expanding or continued then Humanity would be doomed because of multiple fates that only lead to our extinction
