Online Calendar Tool

Like a regular calendar, is used to schedule when important things are coming up like a quiz or test, or big project
But, something that is nice about Online calendars is that you can put them in groups, so as the parent you can give your child an idea of what you are doing along with them giving you information about what they have going on

This prevents the parent scheduling something on a day where the student has a test.

If the student doesn't want their parents to know what their schedule then that could be problematic.

Cell Phones

Probably the most versatile piece of technology the parent could have if it is a smart phone, or just a phone that can text and email at the very least.
If it is a smartphone, you can do pretty much all of the things I have listed on the smart phone. But the biggest benefit is that it is portable.

However, for the student, if they have a phone this can be the biggest distraction for them either in the classroom or at home.

So, you have to make sure that the boundaries are set and clear in order to prevent this from happening as much as possible because you can do so much with a smart phone and it is very easy to get distracted on it.

Email

Similar to Twitter, is another way of communication about upcoming assignments, quizzes, tests, etc.
But can also be used for quick conversations about something that happened in the class that day.

Using Email can be somewhat confusing as it is a more formal way of communication than Twitter, so knowing the format can take some time to figure out.

However, you can just take the time to learn how to format your Emails properly.

Podcast

Different way of learning more information about what is going on in class.
Can be more interesting than just sitting in the classroom.

Loaded with information

However, like Twitter, students can get easily distracted with Podcasts as well because there are a lot of podcasts out there on other topics than just school related things, so they could get hung up watching a podcast about sports instead of school.

So, like Twitter, make sure the guidelines of use are clear making the podcasts they should be watching only school related.

Twitter

Can be quick ways to update parents on upcoming assignments, quizzes, tests, etc.
Easy to use

Since Twitter is a form of social media, the student can get easily distracted looking at other things on it than school.

So, to try and prevent this make sure their are guidelines for what can and can't be done on Twitter.
