Developing oral communication skills can be challenging, especially for those who experience nervousness and stuttering. Practice and repetition are key strategies to improve clarity and confidence.

Unit 4 Portfolio

Media

Film analysis (Unit 2 Activity 5)
Film analysis organizer (Unit 2 Activity 5)
Comic strip (Unit 2 Activity 1)
Before making the comic strip I didn't understand character, setting or plot archetypes. I learnt that these are common themes used in every movie or story. I enjoyed making my comic strip with the different archetypes. I think I could improve on my knowledge of in-depth archetypes and different kinds of archetypes. I will do this by thinking about similarities between different stories next time I'm reading a story or watching a movie.

Writing

Research report (Unit 3 Activity 8)
Peer feedback form (Unit 3 Activity 7)
Report outline (Unit 3 Activity 6)
Research notes graphic organizer (Unit 3 Activity 6)
Memo (Unit 3 Activity 5)
Research questions (Unit 3 Activity 4)
Before the q chart I never thought to think about the questions I should ask myself before I ask myself them. It taught me to think about all of the possible questions in every possible way because you never know when you could miss an important question. I feel like the q-chart specifically helped me with my research report as it made me answer all the possible questions the reader could have had. I think I could improve on more in-depth questions, I will do this by making more q-charts for future assignments.
Research report brainstorming (Unit 3 Activity 4)
Effective graphics discussion (Unit 3 Activity 3)
Business letter (Unit 3 Activity 2)
Retell of a short horror story (Unit 2 Activity 4)

Reading

Any of your blog posts from Unit 3
Concept map (Unit 2 Activity 6)
Short story chart (Unit 2 Activity 3)
The short story chart taught me to be more thoughtful to what I'm reading. For example before when I was reading I didn't think about character archetypes or Atmosphere ect. Now when I read a story I look for these things which makes the story more detailed and I have more of a sense on what the author was trying to convey. I would like to improve on my knowledge of sub-genres of horror. I only studied phycological this course this was partly by accident but mostly because I am drawn to phycological thrillers as they are my favourite stories or film. I would like to learn about moral allegory and the fantastic. I plan to do this by watching a movie from one of those sub-genres and thinking about the questions on this chart.

Oral communication

recording of an oral essay (Unit 1 Activity 4)
Before the recording of the essay for speeches at school or any public speaking I would get very nervous and stutter my words. Recording the personal essay took many tries but, made me realize it gets easier with more practice. I have learnt that reading your speech/essay out loud over and over can help the clarity of my speech. One thing I need to improve on is taking longer pauses in between paragraphs and periods. I plan to do this by counting to 5 in my head before beginning the next sentence and to 10 before beginning the next paragraph.
