Unmet Needs At HPSS

At HPSS, several issues are impacting both the teachers and students. One concern is the limited time teachers have to cover their material due to the restrictive bell schedule. A proposed solution is to dedicate specific days to lectures and others to assignments, thereby avoiding the rush to fit everything into one class period.

Unmet Needs At HPSS

Student Unmet Needs

Students Sleep (R.K)
My students have busy schedules with work, sports, etc. This causes them to sleep in and be late to school

A solution that could be implemented would be to push school starting time back to 9:15 and ending at 3:25. This would give students an extra hour to sleep/get ready for a school day.

Parental Involvement (R.L)
Parents aren't often involved within the school

Involve parent volunteers for school trips, have more school events (BBQS, ETC).

Expensive Nutrition (R.K)
The School cafeteria is very expensive.

The solution that I could offer would be to do a year pass for the cafeteria. This would consist of a meal a day prepared by the cafeteria. This would still be a little expensive but worth it in the long run for students.

Language Support (R.K)
Many students around are school have came from Ukraine. Almost all of them have a language barrier and are forced into presentation's with the little English that they know.

I think that Huron park should encourage students to take a English as a second language, to help non English speaking students. This class would consist of basic reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

Lack Of Air-conditioning (R.L)
Air-conditioning is a need considering people can overheat and have issues with their heart rate as well as over excessive sweating, Students would be more comfortable in a cooler environment during hotter seasons
During the summer, students often complain about how hot the school is and will often put a stop on work and even sometimes skip class so they can find somewhere cooler to be

Install air conditioning throughout the school and keep it on during hotter months.

Mental Health Support (R.K)
HPSS doesn't advertise mental health support enough around the school. To my knowledge we don't have any professional psychologists and or counselors.

Increase funding for school-bases mental health programs that fund more mental health professionals. To provide accessible support for students in need at HPSS.

Staff Unmet Needs

Lack Of EA's (student helpers) (R.L)
I have noticed that most of the EA teachers in our school handle many more students than just one which can cause a student to get less attention and help than they need.

Hire more EA student helpers and increase the budget they have to put into the students.

remove limited Time Teaching (R.L)
Whenever im in class I notice that teachers often have to cut off what they are saying due to the bell.

Remove bells that end class and have classes focus on lectures one day then assignments the next day instead of cramming them all into one day.

Less work on teachers sick days (R.L)
I have talked to multiple teachers about their sick days and they often mention how taking a day off gives them more work to do than just being there.

On a day that a teacher is sick, make all their classes work periods for work the students already know the instructions to.

Low Budget (R.K)
I often hear teachers complain or state how they don't have enough of a budget. For example teachers have told me that they use money out of their own pockets to purchase teaching supplies.

My solution would be to encourage the government to increase public school funding on taxes. They could also go another way by fundraising and accepting donations.

Ineffective Electronic Devices (R.K)
Many classes in HPSS have computers that don't work, for example in our class we have about 15-20 computers and I would say that 10 of them don't work/are very slow.

My solution would be to implement a regular maintenance schedule so that computers can continue to run smoothly. This would include cleaning software, removing unnecessary files, and ensuring all the software is up to date.

Student Involvement (R.K)
Many students have a hard to concentrating in class or showing up.

A solution to help fix student involvement would be to make learning more enjoyable for the student. The student could make their own assignments on a class topic and present their knowledge in their owns ways instead of ways given by teacher.
