In the mid-1800s, a significant number of Irish immigrants arrived in Canada, primarily due to the Potato Famine. These immigrants played a crucial role in the construction of the Rideau Canal, which took place between 1826 and 1832.

Chinese

The Chinese came to Canada during 1881 and 1884.


The Chinese came to Canada for construction jobs. They were hired to work on building the Canadian Pacific Railway.

17,000 Chinese men were hired, They were only paid $1 per day and they were supposed to buy their own gear, camping suplies and food. Most people didn't like them and/or didn't trust them


About 600 Chinese railroad employees died. Some reasons are dynamite explosions, weather, natrual disasters and sicknesses.

Irish immigrants were crucial to the construction of the famous Rideau canal, about 2,000 Irish people helped. The construction started in 1826 and ended in 1832. Sadly many workers died from malaria ( malaria is an illness)
