Printed material

Librarian is allowed to make a maximum of three copies of text ONLY if the copy needs replacement.

Teacher may make copies for exact number of students with one copy for each, and students may use resource in original work with citations.

Poems less than 250 words, articles/stories/essays less than 2,500 words, 10% of longer works, one picture/diagram per resourse, maximum of two pages of illustration

Videos

Students can use about 3 minutes or 10% of the source, teachers must show video for educational use.

The mateirals must be legally required, NOT bootleg or home recording

Includes: Videotapes (rented and purchased), DVDs, laserdiscs, Multimedia Encyclopedias, Quicktime Movies, clips from the Internet

Music

A maximum of 30 seconds of the resourse is allowed to be used for an educational purpose.

The use of any music resourse must have an eduational purpose in order to qualify as fair usage.

Includes: CD's, casette tapes, records, and clip from the Internet

General overview

Using resources without following copyright guidelines results in civil or criminal penalties.

Fair use is what exempts someone from having to follow copyright guidelines as outlines in Section 107 of the U.S. Copyright act of 1976.

Copyright laws are in existance to protect the origanal work of individuals.
