Learning Log: Algebraic Reasoning
Personal Connections
I chose to create a mind map for this last learning log to explore new ways of organizing my thoughts
I have always liked algebra and patterning more than any other unit in math. Although I am slightly nervous about teaching math, especially now in my grade 6 placement, with these new skills and strategies for teaching algebra, I feel much more prepared going into it.
I really like to organize my thoughts in this way; it allows me to group my thoughts together and minimize the wording to be shorter and more concise
Class Involvement and Student Engagement
have students create linear growing patterns in pairs; have one student guess the other students rule
conjecture: educated guess/prediction
ask student for clarification for their answer; have the class express if they agree or disagree through healthy and respectful discussion
This supports students in their own learning
Charting Linear Growing Patterns
graphing linear growing patterns is a way to visually depict the growth of the pattern
is the line really steep indicating a higher multiple?
is the line growing really slowly indicating a smaller multiple?
graphing these patterns also encompasses different strands of math: algebra and data management
Input/Output Charts
use as a way to demonstrate linear growing patterns
helps to clearly map out what the algebraic relationship is between the input and output
Part-Part-Whole Relationship
thinking of multiple units as groups
1 = 1 group of 3
2 = 2 groups of 3
3 = 3 groups of 3
Basics
RULE: output = input x position number + constant
output, input, position number
linear growing patterns
multiplier, constant, rule
multiplier is multiplied, constant is added
