what to learn

anything new! I want to learn it all. I want to learn how to be more artistic with my layouts and create art that has function, not ones that decorate. I am hoping to learn about new tools in illustrator and photoshop that will make graphics look very appealing and new way to represent certain information in a visual format. Layout techniques. I am especially interested in finding more ways to incorporate both editorial and non-editorial art into the paper. Our program does a great job with graphics and photos, but we also have a lot of talented artists that I feel we could utilize SO much more in the paper. So I really would like to discover all of the possible ways to place art into our layouts outside of just augmenting graphics. I wanted to learn about editorial cartooning (because I know nothing about that) and incorporating illustration in your publication. I also think magazine design would be useful to know in general.

comfort level

i have a photoshop program and i know how to use it fairly well; however i find it hard to sketch with a mouse. Not comfy at all. "I've use both programs for 3 years. I own a mac. " Very comfortable with photoshop and illustrator however I do most of my graphics on a windows computer therefore I am not so comfortable with Macs. I am comfortable with photoshop. I'm extremely comfortable with photoshop and use it quite frequently, a little less so with illustrator, but I still know my general way around the program. I have not really used a Mac as both my laptop and our lab computers are PCs. Well, I have Adobe Photoshop and illustrator, and I know the basics but nothing further than that. I know how to turn those computers on, and usually I just press a bunch of buttons and it works for me.

experience

i have taken several art classes involving 2d draw/paint I have no experience. I create infographics for my publication I have had one year of experience creating graphics by using illustrator, photoshop, and indesign for my school publication. Very little. We did a few things in class. I've had a tablet for the past three years and use it mostly for small self-motivated projects. This past year I had the opportunity to both draw elements for a cover and draw an entire cover itself for the paper. We have also included several illustrations and editorial art throughout our paper and graphics I bought a drawing tablet, but I don't really know how to use it. Right now, it's a $90 paperweight, but this class gives me hope otherwise. I've only ever worked with traditional art mediums - graphite, charcoal, etc.

creative illustration techniques

Very little time will be spent in the creative techniques class on the teaching of actual drawing. Its focus is on how to use the software to create images to illustrate content. How much you draw will really depend on your ability as an artist. Pen tablets are available, If you want to use them to draw. Most people in the class probably will be using their own photos and other existing art to create their illustrations.
