Cultural Advantage of Learning in Boston
The school is only a few feet from the beautiful Public Garden and is just across from the Charles River Esplanade and the Hatch Shell. We are located in one of the most prestigious neighborhoods of Boston, the Back Bay, just a few blocks from the famous Cheers Pub.
As part of the school’s curriculum, students participate in field trips to the various museums. Boston’s world-renowned Museum of Fine Arts is just a few stops on the subway. Within walking distance of the school is fashionable Newbury Street. There you will find an attractive collection of art galleries, art studios, boutiques, churches, and retail stores. The Boston Public Library, Copley Place, Faneuil Hall, and downtown shopping areas are all within easy reach.
The Butera School of Art is easily reached by public transportation. The school is located near the Arlington Street MBTA station on the Green Line. (See map on back inside cover.) Students from the suburbs commute by train or bus to North or South Station and then transfer to the MBTA’s Green Line or Red Line. Students who commute to the Back Bay Station can walk to school.

COMMERCIAL ART INTERVIEW/PORTFOLIO
Each applicant for Commercial Art/Graphic Design must submit a portfolio for review and evaluation during the initial interview. The emphasis of this portfolio review is on the applicant’s drawing ability. The portfolio should consist of 10 pieces of artwork.
If you do not have a portfolio, please create these five assignments:
A portrait
A perspective drawing of a room with a table and a chair
A telephone
An automobile
A landscape or cityscape drawing
All artwork must be original and not copied from existing drawings or photographs

EXCEPTIONS
For applicants living outside the New England area, an interview may be waived; however, it is highly recommended. Commercial Art portfolios in this case may be submitted to the school in the form of slides and will be returned only when postage is included.
TRANSFER STUDENTS
Students with previous art training from one or more art schools or who have taken a variety of studio art classes other than high school classes may apply to the Commercial Art Program as transfer students. The normal application procedure is the same. Transcripts or official documentation of previous training should be submitted along with a high school transcript.
Portfolios should contain artwork representative of all previously attended classes. The school feels it is important to place a transfer student at a level where he or she will be challenged and learn effectively. Each transfer applicant is evaluated and treated on an individual basis
