Se utilizo en la antigua Grecia con una roca volcánica llamada toba de la isla santórini y fue uno de los primeros cementos naturales.

sirve como ligante o aglomerante (sirve para unir) en la fabricación de morteros y hormigones. Para eso se fusiona con los áridos (arena, polvo de piedra, ripio...) y el agua.

Historia

La historia nos cuenta que se empleo materiales como pastas y morteros elaborados, con arcilla, greda, yeso y cal con el fin para realizar dichas edificaciones.

Por lo anterior puede decirse, que al cemento se le considera como uno de los materiales más importantes en la construcción, gracias a sus características conglomerantes, siendo de ese modo capaz de unir partes de varios materiales y darles cohesión a partir de diversas modificaciones químicas en la masa. Cabe destacarse que cuando se mezcla con agua, arena y grava se obtiene el concreto, una mezcla de tipo maleable y uniforme.
