Representation

Examples include 'number show and tell', building numbers with digit cards, using place value charts, place value + charts for expanded form & pictoral representations (1 cube vs. 10 cube rod).

Have students understand the difference between the forms of representation of numbers (standard, expanded, written)

Creating their own methods for working through addition and subtraction

Recognizing/Manipulating Quantities

Using landmark numbers such as 5,10,20 to count quantities in steps

Counting ON vs. Counting ALL

Activities with WHOLE/PART relationships using manipulatives

Operational Sense

Making estimations and predictions

Manipulatives such as number lines and dot cards to understand the basics of adding and subtracting

Recognizing mathematical concepts in everyday life.
