Human population growth and impacts (Chapter 12)

The rapid growth of the human population, driven by medical advancements and improved living conditions, has significant ecological impacts. Industrialized nations have a much larger ecological footprint compared to developing countries due to higher resource consumption and CO2 emissions.

Human population growth and impacts (Chapter 12)

Conflict is present everywhere in the world around us. We experience conflict on a daily basis, and it can be minor or major.

Conflict in a story is a struggle between opposing forces. Characters must act to confront those forces and there is where conflict is born. If there is nothing to overcome, there is no story. Conflict in a story creates and drives the plot forward.

Human activities cause environmental problems and many human activities are unsustainable.

This conflict develops from a protagonist’s inner struggles and may depend on a character trying to decide between good and evil or overcoming self-doubt. This conflict has both internal and external aspects, as obstacles outside the protagonist's force them to deal with inner issues.

Burning coal to provide energy creates toxins
Many solutions are needed to provide the needs of a growing human population and, at the same time, preserve the environment.
Human activities have decreased biodiversity

Give examples of man versus self conflict in the real world.

Preserving biodiversity is important for the overall health of all populations on Earth.

Give examples of man versus self conflict in a literary work.

Triangle (upright) means growth, decreased average life span (Kenya). Rectangular shape means population is not expanding and is stable (sweden)

In this type of conflict, a character is tormented by natural forces such as storms or animals. This is also an external conflict.

Triangle (inverted) means the population is shrinking

Give examples of man versus nature conflict in a literary work.

Ecological footprint- the amount of productive land that is required for each person in a defined area, such as a country, for food, water, transportation, housing, waste, management, and other requirements.
The wealthiest 20 % of the world’s population consumes 86% of the world’s resources and produces 53% of the world’s CO2 emissions

Human population Growth (Chapter 12)

A situation in which two characters have opposing desires or interests. The typical scenario is a conflict between the protagonist and antagonist. This is an external conflict.

The ecological footprint of industrialized countries is much greater than the ecological footprint of developing countries.
The age structure of a population varies from country to country.
Prior to modern technology, the human population size was stable; however, it is now growing exponentially.
Population grow faster because of medical advancement, longer life, technology, and better shelter

Give examples of man versus man conflict in the real world.

Demography- the study of human populations, including population size, density, distribution, movement, and birth and death rates.

Give examples of man versus man conflict in a literary work.

Population pyramids: bar graphs that shows the age distribution in a population, which demographers use to study a population.
Trying to summit Mount Everest
Doubling time- the time it takes for a population to double in number
