Impact of leukemia

The health care system

Since health care is free in canada he cost of Leukemia is paid by the tax payers which effects the economy so Leukemia effects the health care system by requiring many jobs such as nurses, doctors and technologists. There is also lots of research on the cancer needed.

The media

Leukemia does not have a great impact on the media but many patients find support through the media, many patients share their story and are able to ge support. In the US where health care is not free gofundme pages are common on the media to help someone struggling to pay for treatment.

Employment

Treatment for leukemia requires lots of hospitals trips which means the patient will need lots of time away from work many jobs will be accepting of this however some may need to leave and will receive pay for sick leave. Patients may want to return to work during their recovery.

The economy

The burden of Leukemia on the health care system is extremely expensive. The average patient costs about 156,000$ per year. Over the years a patient can cost up to around $800,000.

The individual

The individual will go through lots of changes mentaly as well as physically. The physical aspect is there are many side effects of leukemia causing the patients to feel very nauseous and unwell. Many patients will also experience mental issues like depression and anxiety knowing they are sick and may not recover.

Family

Leukemia is a life threatening illness and causes a lot of stress on the family of the patient. Luckily since we are in Canada health care is free which relives family's of that burden however it is very distressing for families having to deal with hospital trips, procedures and separation.
