Ensuring kitchen safety involves several key practices to prevent accidents and injuries. To reduce falls, bumps, and bruises, it's important to keep cupboard doors and drawers closed, clean up spills immediately, and use proper equipment like ladders to reach high places.

Preventing Cross-Contamination (preparing food)

Keep tea towels clean.
Keep cleaning items and other chemicals away from food.
Thoroughly clean work station.
Always wash hands when going back and forth between foods.

Preventing Electrocution

Keep electrical appliances away from water.
Dry hands before operating electrical appliances.
Keep cords away from heat sources.
If an object becomes stuck in an electrical appliance, unplug before removing the item.
Unplug any electrical appliances from the outlet by the plug, do not tug on the cord.

Preventing Falls, Bumps, and, Bruises

Use a ladder/ stool to retrieve high or hard to-reach objects.
Keep cupboard doors and drawers closed or shut when not in use.
Clean up spills immediately with paper towel.

Preventing Burns

Do not operate microwaves when empty.
Open lids/ remove plastic wrap away from you to prevent Burns.
Follow manufactures recommendations for appropriate cookware.
When using a microwave, make sure you follow the manufactures instructions.
Keep in mind, most elements remain hot after use.
Pull the oven rack out of the oven before removing hot cookware.
Open lids away from your body, this ensures the steam is released without burning you.
Use proper potholders when handling hot cookware.
Keep handles titled inward on the stove.

Preventing Injury to Children

Teach children about kitchen Safety.
Store knives out of reach of children.
Move household chemicals out of children's reach and/or put safety latches on all cupboards.
Put a cover over the garbage disposal switch.
Remove small magnets from the refrigerator to prevent choking hazards.
If you have children under the age of 2 in the house, use a safety gate to the kitchen.

Preventing Poisoning

Follow the manufactures directions when handling insect control chemicals.
Don't mix cleaning products together. Mixing some chemicals may cause hazardous reactions.
Store dangerous products out of the reach of children, pets, and away from food items.
Read all product labels and only use as intended.
Keep drain cleaners, household cleaners, and other products which contain poisons in their original containers.

Preventing Cross-Contamination (Storing food)

Keep your fridge organised, meats away from vegetables, produce in the crisper, etc.,
Cover food with plastic wraps, foils, or in containers.
Don't keep refrigerated food outside of the fridge for more than two hours.

Preventing Fires

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS - Always have a fire extinguishers or baking soda near in case of fires.
CLOTHING FIRE - If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, and roll.
GREASE FIRES - Use baking soda to put out the fire. Water or flour will only make the fire grow.
SMALL PAN FIRES- Smother the fire with a larger lid.
Have a smoke detector near the kitchen.
Don't leave the kitchen unattended while cooking.
Clean up grease build-up from the stove, oven, and exhaust fan regularly.
Keep towels, potholders,paper towels, and other flammable items away from the stove and oven.
Tie back hair when in the kitchen.
Wear short or tight fitting sleeves while cooking.
Store oils away from the stove.

Preventing Cuts

If glass is broken, sweep it up immediately, wipe the area with a damp paper towel, place the glass is a paper bag and then the garbage.
Wash and store knifes away from other utensils.
Never use knives for anything but their intended purpose.
If a knife falls, step back and let the knife drop. Trying to prevent the knife from falling is immensely more dangerous then picking the knife up and rinsing it.
Cut food away from your body.
Use sharp knives (dull knives require ore pressure which results in more accidents).
