Saint Lucia's Day honors the martyrdom of Saint Lucia, who was killed in the 3rd century after refusing to marry. In Sweden, she has become a symbol of light, celebrated on December 13th, the darkest time of the year.

Why Lucia has candles on her head

She wears a crown with five, seven or nine candles.
She became in Sweden the symbol of light.
Because she died in the darkest time of the year.

Why Lucia became a saint

After she got killed she became a saint.
She was born i Italy in the 3rd century
She was a saint . Than a man wanted to marry her but she was refused. Because she didn't marry she was killed.

How they celebrate it

Getting ready for Saint Lucia's Day

They make saffron buns what is the traditional food.
Mothers wake their daughets up very early at about two or three o'clock.
The oldest daughter gets dressed as Lucia. She puts in a white dress, red belt and a crown with candles on it.

How people celebrate that day

You can see them in schools, hospitals, offices and even SAS flights.
Lucias take saffron buns, coffe and cups.
They sing a song Santa Lucia
