DIALOGUE: Choosing a wine in a restaurant
Read the following conversation in a restaurant in Yorkshire between Peter and Juan about the different types of wine to accompany a meal with. From the context, try to guess what the meaning of the words/phrases in bold are. Then do the quiz at the end to check if you are right.

'You choose.'

'It's a very sweet wine which you normally have when eating something sweet. Sherry is different, it's a fortified wine. They add a spirit, which has more alcohol to the wine when making it.'

'What's a dessert wine?'

'I hope that they know that the wine has to be chilled when it's served. I hate drinking white wines like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay or Albariño which haven't been in a fridge and are served at room temperature. What do you want to drink with the dessert? A dessert wine or a sweet sherry?'

'Fine by me.'

'Whatever. Well, we can have a white non-sparkling wine with the meal. I don't want to spend too much money, so we should choose a table wine. On the wine list they have an Australian Sauvignon Blanc as the house wine. Is that OK?'

'Is it? But it isn't a Champagne. Champagnes can only come from the Champagne region of northern France. So Cava is a sparkling wine.'

'Are we celebrating? You do know that it's a Champagne?'

'What about having a Cava with the meal? It's white, Spanish and semi-dry. It still has a little sweetness.'

'I understand but I don't agree. Let's choose what to eat and drink'

'I quite like bottles of wine with plastic corks. They don't break when you're opening the bottle with a corkscrew. So when you pour the wine from the bottle into the glass there's never any small pieces of cork in the wine. And new world wines always tell you on the label what type of grape the wine is made from, like Tempranillo, Shiraz or Chardonnay. So, you know if it's a dry, medium or sweet wine.'

'I'm not so sure about new world wines from Argentina, California, Australia etc... They don't have the tradition that we have in Spain, or in France. I bought a bottle of Australian Chardonnay last year and the cork was made of plastic! That's not right, a cork should be made of cork!'

'Well, yes I do. But I want to have fish, so I don't think a dry red wine is a good idea. I'd prefer a white wine or something between a white and a red wine, like a rose. Look on the wine list they have a selection of new world wines.'

'There's a good selection of wines here. Ah, there are Spanish wines as well. They have a Marqués de Riscal 2004. It's a very good vintage, one of the best years for Rioja wine. Actually, I went to the vineyard where they grow the grapes and the winery where they make this wine when I was in the north of Spain 2 years ago. And bought a case of Rioja from them for half the price it is in the shops. Do you like dry red wine?'

'No. Look, there's a wine list. Do you want to have a look?'

'You're joking?'

'You do realise that we do drink good wine in England?'

Juan:

'Well, in Spain I would have wine, but I suppose here in England you drink beer.'

Peter:

'So what do you want to drink with the meal?'

What does your coffee say about you? A new study reveals the personality traits of caffeine lovers 1. Every morning in the UK, caffeine lovers drink 70 million cups of coffee. But drinking coffee does not only give you energy in the morning. The type of coffee that you like to drink can also reveal a lot about your personality, according to a new study. 2. Psychologist Dr. Ramani Durvasula matched the coffee preferences of 1000 coffee lovers with common character traits like generosity and moodiness. 3. The results showed that people who drink black coffee prefer a simple life, in general. However, they score low on patience, and they can also be both ruder and moodier than latte drinkers, for example. Black coffee drinkers are not very relaxed about dealing with changes. 4. Latte drinkers are the most generous with their time and typically want to please other people. However, they can also feel slightly more anxious than black coffee drinkers, possibly because they try to do too much for other people. 5. Perfectionist cappuccino drinkers seem to have the most demanding personalities. According to Dr. Durvasula’s research, they also seem to be the most anxious. They’re health-conscious, but some might take this too far. 6. As you might expect, people who drink decaffeinated coffee or ask for soy milk are a bit more health-conscious than other groups like latte drinkers. They also had high levels of anxiety. 7. Instant coffee drinkers tend to be more relaxed than cappuccino drinkers. However, they are poor at planning and often delay things that they need to do. 8. Finally, people who prefer their coffee cold and sweet had the highest score for creativity. These people are trendsetters but, unsurprisingly, are a lot more relaxed about their health than cappuccino drinkers. Sources: Independent.co.uk, Psychcentral.com

PART 1 - Ultramarathons
HOMEWORK! Reading

Read the article about Dean Karnazes, a so-called "ultra marathon" runner. Answer the questions:

7. How does he run without stopping to eat?

6. How does he earn a living? How does he want to make money in the future?

5. How does he prepare for a running event?

4. What natural attributes help Dean Karnazes to run very long distances?

3. How many people take part in ultra marathons?

2. In what ways are ultra marathons different from conventional marathons?

1. How did Dean Karnazes become involved in long distance running?

On the run If you think running a 42-kilometer marathon sounds tough, how about 218 kilometers? Through California’s Death Valley. In summer. 1. When the world’s elite athletes take part in the next London Marathon, the 42-year-old Californian will not be with them. The reason is simple. For Dean Karnazes, the conventional marathon distance of 42 kilometers is only a warm-up. 2. Karnazes first ran the standard marathon distance when he was just 14. After that, he stopped running long distances completely. But then, on the evening of his 30th birthday, he put on a pair of running shoes and decided to run into the night. 3. On the wide roads in the outskirts of San Francisco, and with absolutely no preparation, he ran 50 kilometers. That birthday run changed his life. 4. Today, Karnazes is one of the world’s leading participants in the little-known sport of ultramarathon running. Unlike the 42 kilometer city marathons that take place around theworld, "ultras" are different because of their unusual terrain, typically deserts and mountains, and their extremely long distances, anything between 80 and 240 kilometers. 5. "In ultra races, victory is simply finishing the race," explains Karnazes. 6. In the US, around 15,000 people regularly take part in ultra-marathons, and worldwide, according to Karnazes, it is 100,000 and rising rapidly. The Comrades in South Africa is one of the most wellknown events. The 90 kilometers race takes place every June. Runners have to complete the course within 12 hours, and scenes at the finish are often desperate. 7. The best ultra-distance athletes, explains Karnazes, have special attributes: "I’m pretty slow but my biomechanics are good." He is talking about his perfectly neutral "foot strike", a natural running style that helps him to avoid injuries. His relatively advanced age is also a common feature among competitors. Age helps the ultra runner to cope with discomfort because older runners are more pragmatic. 8. Karnazes has a day job – he is the president of an organic health food company, and he has to make time for training. "In preparation for an event, I get up at 4am four mornings a week and run for a few hours and then try and do an hour in the evening." Because of his success, companies are paying him to endorse their products, and Karnazes hopes that this will soon allow him to make money and run full time. One deal involves testing running shoes for a wellknown adventure clothing company, The North Face. 9. Authors have written about the mental effects of kilometers on the road. "On the Western States run," explains Karnazes, "you run the first 80 kilometers with your legs and the next 80 with your mind. I’ve fallen asleep a number of times. Once, I woke up running down the middle of the road; the movement becomes automatic, you just switch to autopilot." 10. One run was a 350 kilometers, non-stop loop of San Francisco’s Bay area, a challenge which took an incredible 80 hours and 44 minutes. "You only stop to change your shoes. I pee, drink and eat while I run," says Karnazes. "If you’re running for three days straight you can’t just eat energy snacks, so I eat pizza. I carry a phone and a credit card. I tell the delivery guy where I’m going to be in 20 minutes and he meets me on the corner." Article adapted from The Independent, 12 March 2024
