When he choose to not leave the camp, thats when he embraced his situation. He did this so he would have a purpose and meaning in his life by helping others who are in a worse situation then him

MP: His expirence with apathy contributed to his insight because it made him numb to beatings, and made him not care about what was going on around him the camp. This was a necessary stage because it made him go through the motions and feel very depressed about his current situation in the camp
Apathy is the blunting of ones emotions. Suicide, and negative thoughts occur because he is mentally weak and unable to think of anything that is motivating.

He is not use to seeing such gruesome things and this very scary for him. Shock also occurs when they arrive at the camp and everything around him is filthy dirty
