SPS / Solent Forum

In 2021 the Solent faces a number of distinct challenges: the impact of climate change and the need for adaptation, the increasing impact of planning and development, both homes and business, including infrastructure change,

SPS has been a member of the Solent Forum Steering Committee since SF was set up in 1992. Indeed SPS provided the initiative for the creation of SF under the shared chairmanship of Maldwyn Drummond.

Position

In common with many similarly sized charities, SPS membership has been in decline for a number of years and the council members who form the trustees of the charity are increasing in age. Under new chairmanship, we are actively looking to grow both our membership and our Council strength.

Given the declining membership

While the aims of Solent Forum and SPS are closely matched, an unsurprising fact given our shared heritage, the audiences and membership of the two organisations are separate but complementary.

SPS membership comprises individuals drawn from the community at large, residents, leisure water users others with a formal or informal academic interest in the Solent, its coastline and its ecology.

Role of Steering Group Member

The responsibilities of a Steering Group member are as follows: - to be committed to and act as a champion for the achievement of the Objects; - to be a good ambassador for the Steering Group and for the Forum; - to attend Steering Group meetings, vote on items of business and make a positive contribution to the achievement of the Objects; - to act as an advocate for the Forum in seeking approval of their organisation’s commitment to the Forum; - to consider and react to issues raised by members; - to consult with member organisation representatives individually and/or collectively on matters affecting their interest; - to participate in the appointment process of Solent Forum staff, if required.
