Disadvantages of Online Learning (ЭТм-11д)

Online learning provides significant flexibility and convenience, allowing students to access their coursework at their own pace. However, it often leads to a sense of isolation due to the solo nature of the activity.

Disadvantages of Online Learning (ЭТм-11д)

Disadvantages of Online Learning (ЭТм-11д)

Inflexible

Flexibility may be lost as adjustments to the course in response to student reaction are not easy to make once the course is underway.

Reliant on Human Support

Reliant on Human Support: elearning is still dependent on help on either the course materials or the software.

No facilities

Most traditional colleges offer their students facilities to use such as libraries, gyms, student stores, computer labs, research labs, study areas and more. Online learning can't always provide these helpful tools.

Students with beginner-level computer skills

Managing computer files and online learning software can sometimes seem complex for students with beginner-level computer skills

Internet connections or older computers

Slow Internet connections or older computers may make accessing course materials frustrating

Low motivation or bad study

Learners with low motivation or bad study habits may fall behind

Structures of a traditional class

Without the routine structures of a traditional class, students may get lost or confused about course activities and deadlines

Instructor available

Instructor may not always be available when students are studying or need help

Pedagogically Unsound

The electronic environment does not per se offer a pedagogically enhancing learning environment.

Psychological stress

observations show that the objectives and tasks assigned to such classes, is not always achieved and trainees are disappointed. Moreover, in their view, not only and not so much in the training, but in their own abilities, which, of course, entails a profound psychological stress.

Potential for fewer networking opportunities

Being a member of college organizations is a good way to network and something you can place on your resume, but your organization options are limited in the online learning environment. While you might have an online discussion board with discussion threads with fellow classmates, you have not placed a name with a face, and you might be from different parts of the state, country, even the world, making networking less likely

Hands-on or lab work and Practical skills

Practical skills are somewhat harder to pick up from online resources. For example, although building a wooden table is something you can easily share information about, record videos of and explain, the practical experience is essential. Pottery and car engineering are examples of skills that require hands-on experience

Health Related Concerns

E-learning requires the use of a computer and other such devices; this means that eyestrain, bad posture and other physical problems may affect the learner. When running an online course it’s a good practice to send out guidelines about correct sitting posture, desk height, and recommendations for regular breaks.

Online learning cannot offer human interaction

Only in a small group a person can develop properly. At school, students learn how to make friends, be patient, get rid of disappointment, and especially to compete. Competition between colleagues can be very stimulating and students will only benefit from it. Online learning cannot offer human interaction.

Isolation

Though e-learning offers ease, flexibility and the ability to remotely access a classroom in the student’s own time, learners may feel a sense of isolation. This is because learning online is a solo act for the most part, which may give the learner the feeling that they are acting completely alone. As technology progresses and e-learning benefits from the advancements being made, learners can now engage more actively with professors or other students using tools such as video conferencing, social media, and discussion forums amongst others.

Missing out on non-verbal communication

Non-verbal communication is as important, if not more important than verbal communication, and it’s hard to see non-verbal communication online. Similar to the need for face-to-face conversations with a teacher, non-verbal cues are impossible online, and can be just as communicative as actual words.
