Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is characterized by the presence of two or more specific clinical criteria, including abnormal white blood cell counts, fever, elevated respiratory rate, and increased heart rate.

CRITERIA (When any 2 or more of these are observed at a time SIRS is confirmed)

Heart rate >90 beats per minute
Fever >38◦C or < 36◦C
Abnormal white blood cell count (>12,000/mm3 or <4,000/ mm3 or >10% bands
Respiratory rate >20 breaths per minute or PaCO2 <32 mm Hg
