ETIOLOGY

Combination of several “insults"

Infection

Trauma

Inflammation

PATHOGENESIS

Preoperative Illness

Trauma or Operation

Tissue Ingury

Excessive Inflammatory Response

Inadequate Resuscitation

SIRS/MOD

Optimal Oxygen Therapy

Recovery

CRITERIA (When any 2 or more of these are observed at a time SIRS is confirmed)

Heart rate >90 beats per minute

Fever >38◦C or < 36◦C

Abnormal white blood cell count (>12,000/mm3 or <4,000/ mm3 or >10% bands

Respiratory rate >20 breaths per minute or PaCO2 <32 mm Hg
