Angie's Mobile Apps & Web 2.0 tools

There are various digital tools and apps available that enhance educational experiences in the classroom. Storybird is a popular choice among educators, offering a platform for students to create and share stories, facilitating collaboration and improving writing skills.

Educational Games

The apps chosen are not comparable in subject matter. Math Ninja is strictly an app that provides repetition for math facts. Scratch and The Oregon Trail gives students a deeper understanding of the content. Finally, Shake-a-Phrase is a fun way to promote understanding of parts of speech and a unique way to provide writing prompts.

Scratch

I want to work with my students next year on coding. This program teaches kids how to create their own games.

Shake-a-Phrase

This is so fun! Works on apple and android phones. Kids can work on parts of speech, get story starters, and work on vocabulary.

The Oregon Trail

Available on iPhone and iPod Touch. This is the classic game that has been around for years. This game has students role play and make decisions for their characters that simulate life on the Oregon Trail.

Math Ninja

Math Ninja has 3 levels of difficulty and provides arcade style gaming to study math facts. This would be a great solution for early finishers and perhaps motivate other students to complete their work.

Publishing Apps

Storybird is my favorite and I think the most exciting app. For a fee, teachers can create and grade assignments here too. All have ready made pictures available. I think Toontastic would be great for artistic students and for those with writing difficulties.

ScribblePress

This is both a website and iPad/iPhone app. The iPad app allows students to illustrate their story with their own on screen drawings. Stickers are available for both formats that look like children's drawings. On line publishing is free!

Storybird

This is a free website that is extremely useful in the classroom. Students can create stories to share with other students in their classroom. In turn, those students can make changes to the story turning it into a collaboration. There are thousands of amateur authors that can be followed. I think this would be good for learning how to critique, practice editing, and to illustrate how writing traits can enhance a story.

ComicBook!

$1.99 iTunes app that lets kids put pictures and layouts in a comic book style and write stories to publish.

Toontastic

Free iPad app for publishing. This allows kids to write and then narrate their own stories as well as draw and animate pictures to go with the story. I would use this to excite students about writing.

Toontastic: School Edition is $9.99 and has ready made sets as writing prompts for students. This is especially good for students that need an extra level of support for understanding story elements.

Communication

Remind101 is a quick way to send out mass messages but it does not have the same capabilities of the other 3 apps. Teacher's Assistant Pro and PINform are probably my favorite as both allow for documenting behavior, messaging, and file sharing. Like the other three, Edmodo is another messaging tool. But, unlike the others it allows for online discussions that can get even the quietest student involved in discussions.

PINform

PINform is available on iTunes. This app allows for clear communication between teachers and parents. A teacher can take a snapshot of a student's work and add notations to the picture before e-mailing a parent. Also, a teacher can quickly send a message for missing work or broadcast a class wide message.

Edmodo

Edmodo is another teacher/student communication tool. This tool allows teachers to send out an e-mail with link relevant to what is happening in class. Also, teachers can keep students up to date with classwork by posting a calendar. Students can submit work electronically as well.

Remind101

This is available and free on both smartphone and android products. Remind101 allows teachers to either text or email mass messages to students and parents.

Teacher's Assistant Pro

This is $3.99 app available from iTunes. Can store pictures, anecdotal notes, store data and keeps behavior records to use when contacting parents or during p/t conferences.
