what happened in Toronto

In 1847 more than 38 000 Irish refugees arrived in Toronto. The city was overwhelmed. Healthy refugees were urged to move on but sick refugees that could go no further stayed. To stop the spread of diseases, boarding houses and hotels were not aloud taking in people who looked sick so a special hospital was built to take care of the sick refugees. By the end of 1847 over 1100 refugees died of sickness and the survivors faced hardship.

The Irish Contributions to Canada

When the Irish settled in Canada they played a huge role in building the Rideau canal connecting lake Ontario to the Ottawa river. They also helped with the lumber industries and build early railroads.

Why they left Ireland

Between 1845 and 1851 hundreds of thousands of Irish people came to Canada looking for jobs and farming opportunities because of the potato famine in Ireland at the time. In Ireland, potatoes were a large part of people's diet and jobs. When a disease attacked the crops in Ireland several years in a row, the potatoes rotted in the soil. with no crops to sell many Irish people couldn't pay rent and were starving. this caused them to get evicted and forced to seek refuge in Canada.

Chinese

Where their community was established

The Chinese settled in the west. Thousands of Chinese people built a community in Vancouver and Richmond around British Columbia. Now one in five people in Vancouver and Richmond are Chinese.

The Chinese's contributions to Canada

When they arrived here thousands of Chinese men worked to build the Canadian Pacific Railway through the Rocky's. they got paid much less then their coworkers only getting 1$ every day also had to buy all their equipment and camping supplies. the work was terrible but they had no choice because they were in desperate need for labourers. The harsh conditions and cheap salary caused around 600 Chinese men to die in the four years it took to build.

Why they left China

In the early 1900's around 15,000 Chinese immigrants migrated to Canada escaping war and poverty in China.

They were driven by fear of war, disease and the lack of job opportunities at the time. also at this time the government was drastically declining because there was an increase in population. It caused the officials to stretch which made them focus more on the corruption. They increased the tax on farmers and provided almost no services to improve the farmers lives.
