A Midsummer Night's Dream
Setting/Conflicts/Theme
Act 5
The setting takes place in the palace of Theseus.
Egeus tells Theseus about the play the craftsmen have prepared and encourages him not to see it because of it being terrible.
Theseus says he doesn't what the couples have told him and Hippolyta adds how all of them narrated the story the exact same way which gives them a reason to believe them.
Everyone watches the play before going to sleep
Act 4
The setting takes place in the forest.
Oberon undoes the love spell on Titania and she is no longer in love with Nick Bottom and thinks it was only a dream.
Puck removes the donkey head from Nick Bottom.
Egeus, Theseus, and Hippolyta find Hermia, Helena, Lysander and Demtrius in the forest.
Egeus demands an answer from his daughter about her decision and Demetrius tells him that he now loves Helena, instead of Hermia.
Theseus says the two couples will join his wedding.
They discuss their "strange dreams" as they exit.
Oberon tells Puck that he has stolen the Prince from Titania
Act 3
The setting takes place in the forest
Puck squeezes the flower juice (love potion) onto Demetrius' eyelids whilst he is sleeping and he wakes up and joins Lysander in declaring love for Helena, instead of Hermia.
Hermia is extremely hurt, mad and upset about Lysander not being in love with her anymore and leaving her in the forest.
Oberon realizes that puck put the potion in the wrong man's eyes.
Oberon uses the potion on Titania and she falls in love with Nick Bottom, who now has the head of a donkey due to Puck.
Act 1
The setting takes place at Theseus' palace in Athens and then switches to a forest outside of Athens near the end of the act.
There is also a bit of conflict between Demetius and Egeus when Demetrius confronts him with a concern about his daughter being in love with another man.
Themes: Love is difficult and doesn't always go the way you want it to. Jealousy between hermia and Helena, and Lysander and Demetrius. Mischief demonstrated by Puck, magic fairies, potions, and dreams.
I think this demonstrates an important life lesson of being grateful of what you have and accepting what you don't, and dealing with it.
Act 2
Conflict between Oberon and Titania (the king and queen of the fairies). Titania has stolen a little Indian Prince as her attendent and Oberon wants custody over him to make him his knight. Titania accuses Oberon of loving Hippoylyta, not being loyal and betraying her.
The love potion meant for Demetrius ended up on Lysander and he wakes up and sees Helena and falls in love with her instead of Hermia
The setting takes place in a forest outside of Athens
