The narrative centers around Starr, a young girl who witnesses the tragic and unjust shooting of her friend Khalil by a police officer. This incident exposes the deep-seated racial prejudices and systemic racism within society.
1. Event- Starr, Chris, and Devante had been joking around about white stereotypes. They kept asking Chris about his food, etc. Chris had also asked them back why all their names are ''uncommon''. This is also a stereotype for black people.
3. After Khalil's death Hailey and Starr were at Mayas's house and They were watching TV. As they were skipping through channels Starr asks Maya to stop on a news channel and the news is about Khalil and his life as a drug dealer. Starr says out loud that its wrong that they are showing him like this on TV and Hailey says he desrves because he is a drug dealer. Hailey is saying that shes not racist and the cop deserves justice while her and Starr end up having an argument.
2. event- Hailey was saying racist things to starr when they were playing basketball. hailey said "pretend that the ball is a piece of chicken". starr didn't like that hailey said that. hailey said something steroptipcal to starr and starr thought that its racist and left the basketnball game.

1. event- At the beginning of the book, the police officer pulled Starr and Khalil over for no reason. The officer was walking from his car to Khalil's. She saw something in Khalil's hand and shot him 3 times even though he was only holding a hair brush. The officer just assumed he had a gun without even looking at his hand properly.
3. event- Starr's dad Maverick was having and argument with Mr. Lewis outside of Maverick's shop. The argument wasn't physical at all, because Maverick was just asking why Mr. Lewis risked his life and told the reports about what King (gang leader) did. Police ended up coming and making Maverick go on the ground and ask for his ID. They ignore Mr. Lewis the whole time.
2. event- Starr had been interviewed on the news about Khalil's death. The interviewer had initially been more focused on finding reasons why Khalil was a bad person and was a drug dealer, instead of going through the case more.
3. event- Towards the end of the book, a protest had happened for Khalil's death. The police started barricaded near the city hall and they were throwing tear gas towards the protesters.
1. event- The introduction. A fight at Big D's party had occurred. This is seen as violence because physically attacking each other is seen as violence. This made Starr and Khalil leave the party.
2. event- Starr's friend, Khalil had been shot by a police officer. This first started when the officer aggressively pinned him against the car and shoved him. The police officer also put a gun towards Starr's head.
