But when they went out into the courtyard with the first light of dawn, they found the whole neighborhood in front of the chicken coop having fun with the angel, without the slightest reverence, tossing him things to eat through the openings in the wire as if he weren’t a supernatural creature but a circus animal.

This quote raises feelings such as disgust within the villagers, since the villagers initially perceived this creature as an angel which is typically described as holy and a deity, but in this situation the villagers associated this creature as somewhat equivalent to a chicken, since it was seen playing with it This quote has been a larger pattern of the angel being mistreated, and abused by the general population of the village, and this would've been the green light to all of that as they now no longer associate him with the holiness that belong to an angel

This quote has changed the way I've read the text as it shows how there could be a sudden change in attitude towards something if it violates
