Goldwater's campaign converted him to fell more conservative and he was appointed gov for 2 years and won against Carter in the 1980 election
Supported small gov't and promoted traditional religious values as well as favoring the military
Grew up in Illinois and was a low time actor who suffered through the great depression

Democrats/Liberals

promoted civil rights and loosening of restrictive values
supported programs in which the gov't actively helped minorities and the impoverished
Presidents like Carter LBJ and Kennedy

Political Climate

As people started to migrate to suburban areas moderate liberals were discouraged by the recession which strengthened republican power
Vietnam War, Iranian Hostage Crisis, Oil Crisis, and Watergate caused distrust in gov't especially in Carter who was a democrat
Conservatives during the 70s started to push harder for their more conservative values and became the New Right
liberal thinking was prominent in youth during the counterculture movement
During the Cold War Era democrats and republicans worked towards the same goal of combating communism

Religious People
increased the number of voters and since religious people favored republican ideals the presidency the election favored a republican candidate
more groups like the Moral Majority sprouted that supported the bibles ways of family life and imposed their values on to what was once non political people
Criticized liberal domestic and foreign policies and blamed them for stagflation
Believed that the gov't shouldn't interfere with private property and business, taxes should be lower on the wealthy and religion was key
