Soldiers uniforms were kften soaking wet, filthy with mud and infested with lice. Diseases such as "trench Foot" were common which rotted the flesh of the feet was caused by standing in mud and water for a long time.
In order to protect themselves from easily being picked off by guns, both sides had their dig soldiers dig shelters(trenches) that were deep enough to have men stand up. Life in the trenches were overall miserable and dangerous.

About 22 800 Canadians served as pilots,gunners,mechanics by the end of the war about 40% of piilots for the Allies were Canadian. Intital use was to spy over enemys but later it progressed into using thjem to drop bombs and fire at a enemy.
